(Sharecast News) - Semiconductor giant Nvidia said on Friday that it will supply over 260,000 of its latest articial intelligence chips to South Korea's government as the country ramps up efforts to become a regional AI hub.
The deal follows a meeting between Nvidia chief executive Jensen Huang, President Lee Jae Myung and industry leaders at the APEC summit in Gyeongju. Korea plans to deploy more than 50,000 chips in national infrastructure projects, while Samsung, SK and Hyundai will each use up to 50,000 chips in smart factories and manufacturing. Naver will purchase 60,000 chips to support cloud and search operations.

Hyundai said it will deepen its partnership with Nvidia by building a supercomputer to support autonomous driving, robotics and in-vehicle AI.

The announcement comes as Nvidia shifts focus to markets less exposed to US-China trade tensions, which have dented its share of China's advanced AI chip market as the US has repeatedly imposed export restrictions on Nvidia chips citing national security concerns.

Nvidia's global expansion efforts helped it reach a $5trn valuation earlier this week, with Huang calling Korea's AI ambitions a new "export of intelligence" to drive global transformation.

As of 1235 BST, Nvidia shares were up 2.10% in pre-market trading at $207.07 each.
